Herndon Friends Meeting

Unprogrammed Meeting For Worship
(Silent Meeting For Worship)

This brief explanation is offered to aid your understanding of our Sunday (First Day) worship and activities.

We begin our time together with a brief period of singing.  Once we have finished, you may sit wherever you wish.  The children join us for the first portion of the Meeting, then go to the other room for First Day School.

An expectant silence slowly settles over the Meeting as we focus on the "Inner Light," that of God within us and others.  We worship without sermons, set prayers, responsive readings or ceremonies.  Each of us has unique contributions to make to worship.  When we come together we find that our group worship is more powerful than our individual meditations.

Occasionally during the silence, individuals may speak.  These messages are usually brief, simply worded, and spiritual.  The deepened silence may be broken again, after a time, whenever anyone feels moved to speak.  Messages may continue with a theme, or be on an entirely different topic, but they are spontaneous and affirmative.

At the end of the hour, the clerk of the Meeting shakes hands with those seated nearby.  The Meeting ends as everyone shakes hands with those nearest them.  Announcements are made and visitors are welcomed.
