The health care debate is everywhere. It's on the front page of every newspaper, it was the subject of President Obama's news conference last night, and it has taken shape in a comprehensive reform bill that the House of Representatives will vote on in the next week.

At long last the House has a comprehensive health care reform bill. And we like it.

We at FCNL don't often find ourselves agreeing with the Pentagon. Yet when Pentagon chief Robert Gates proposed to cut the military budget by ending production of the F-22 fighter jet, we worked hard to build support for these cuts. Now Congress is refusing to shut down production. Urge your senators to cut F-22 funding.

Leaders in the House plan to force a final vote next week on important but flawed climate change legislation. The American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) fails to ensure that U.S. greenhouse gas emissions will be cut quickly, deeply, and effectively. We at FCNL have been urging House committee members to strengthen the bill by eliminating concessions that would allow polluters to increase their greenhouse gas emissions for well over a decade.

Your lobbying and financial support helped FCNL persuade one-quarter of the Senate to cosponsor legislation that would ban cluster bombs -- weapons that have a track record of killing more civilians than soldiers.

Right now, you have the opportunity to strengthen and improve environmental legislation that could become the basis for the first climate change bill to win approval in the House.

Next week, your representative will vote on legislation that would use tens of billions of your tax dollars to expand the war in Afghanistan. On the eve of this vote, on Tuesday, May 12, FCNL is joining with other national organizations to flood Congress with phone calls urging representatives to vote against spending more money on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
